Take the VG SCV for example - if your total portfolio allocation was 100% SCV from Vanguard - roughly 15% in REIT's for total portfolio. Not a very diversified portfolio, eh? No international, no bonds and so on....So if one only wants 10-15% REIT exposure, they can do it with this fund only, and forego a separate REIT fund, correct?
Hence, utilize REIT index with other asset classes (including the SCV if you are so inclined). Then rebalance portfolio but take into consideration potential tax consequences.
